A guide to choosing care

The situation

A study percentage looks precise. To judge what it means, look at who took part, what was compared and how long the study ran.

Read the result with its limits

STEP 1 enrolled 1,961 adults who had obesity, or overweight with a related condition, and had no diabetes.

Over 68 weeks, semaglutide participants lost an average 14.9% of body weight, compared with 2.4% in the placebo group, whose treatment contained no active medicine.

Both groups had advice about daily habits, such as eating and physical activity, as well as regular visits. The maker Novo Nordisk funded the study.

Ask how that extra help compares with the help you would get.

Journal record: STEP trial

SURMOUNT-5 compared tirzepatide with semaglutide in 751 adults with obesity who did not have type 2 diabetes.

Average body-weight loss over 72 weeks was 20.2% with tirzepatide and 13.7% with semaglutide.

Participants knew which medicine they received. Eli Lilly, the maker of tirzepatide, ran and funded the study.

Compare an offer’s written terms with the exact product being discussed. A study result does not answer the billing question.
